PRAISE

A study to provide real time adaptive personal messaging to adults with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

What is PRAISE

PRAISE is a program that provides personalized educational and coaching messages to promote treatment engagement and adherence for adults with  Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Participants will be assessed throughout the program using a transtheoretical (Stage of Change) assessment questionnaire to personalize the program to match the participant’s readiness for change and additional questionnaires to determine their barriers.

Participants will be grouped into different stages of readiness; precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance.  The different stages  will determine the  composition of videos participants have access to.  There are also for different barrier groups; social support, intrinsic motivation, sleep health literacy and Obstructive Sleep Apnea self-efficacy. Participants will receive 10 messages per week; content will be taken from their determined barrier group. Participants will also set goals and receive messages encouraging and reminding  them of their goals.

Participants also have access to a website that provides them additional resources.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea causes breathing to stop repeatedly during sleep.  It can happen multiple times throughout the night and lasts from 10 to 30 seconds. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. It occurs when your breathing is interrupted during sleep for longer than 10 seconds at least five times per hour and is most common in middle aged and older adults.

Johns Hopkins Medicine states as many as 90% of people with obstructive sleep apnea do not know they have it.  Health problems, such as increased blood pressure, instability of oxygen levels , cardiovascular problems can develop as a result of obstructive sleep apnea.

Why PRAISE?

PRAISE aims to promote adherence by reaching participants at their level of readiness for change and through the specific barriers they face.  PRAISE provides participants with informative and educational videos, helps participant track their symptoms and set up goals to promote adherence and provide continued motivation.
