MEMOTEXT Partners with University of New Mexico on Digital Health Tools to Support Opioid Recovery and Pain Management

MEMOTEXT is proud to be collaborating with Dr. Frank Schwebel, a Research Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico’s Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, And Addictions (CASAA), on the development and deployment of innovative digital interventions aimed at improving treatment outcomes for individuals navigating addiction and chronic pain.

Dr. Schwebel’s research focuses on designing evidence-based, technology-driven solutions to enhance behavioral health support. Together, we are advancing two research projects that deliver timely, supportive digital communications to individuals receiving medication for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), while collecting valuable self-reported data on pain, cravings, and treatment effectiveness.

With opioid-related deaths and chronic pain conditions continuing to rise nationwide, there is a critical need for scalable, supportive tools that extend the reach of care beyond clinical settings. These projects leverage mobile technology to provide patients with tailored reminders, behavioral interventions, and self-tracking tools—directly through their mobile phones.

Each program integrates daily and weekly surveys, completed via Qualtrics, with short, dynamic SMS text messages based on principles of Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Participants receive several intervention messages per day, designed to help them manage cravings, stay grounded, and adhere to treatment plans. These communications include links to vetted resources, behavioral prompts, and calls to action intended to promote emotional resilience and self-regulation.

The MEMOTEXT platform is responsible for delivering customized, real-time interventions based on participants’ reported experiences. Daily ecological momentary assessment (EMA) surveys capture fluctuations in pain, mood, and cravings, allowing researchers to assess how the messages are influencing real-world behavior and well-being.

While these projects are still in progress, early results have been encouraging. Individuals are reporting high levels of medication adherence and engagement with the intervention messages.

The flexible architecture of the MEMOTEXT system allows for ongoing adaptation of content and delivery cadence, ensuring the intervention stays responsive to individual needs.
